A Brief History of Camino Real IV

Camino Real IV is part of a series of six paintings and a group of works on paper that Twombly created in 2011, shortly before his death. The title references Tennessee Williams's play Camino Real, a surreal drama set in a mythical Latin American port. Twombly, who had a lifelong fascination with literature, myth, and the Mediterranean, translated the play's dreamlike atmosphere into swirling loops of white paint, punctuated by bursts of red, yellow, and blue. The work embodies his signature style: a tension between chaos and control, ancient and modern.
