Created in 1963, this series comprises nine large-scale canvases that ostensibly narrate the decadent and violent reign of the Roman Emperor Commodus. However, Twombly's approach is far from literal; instead, he translates historical narrative into a visceral experience of color, line, and form. The paintings are characterized by scrawled, graffiti-like marks, smeared pigment, and a palette that ranges from blood red to pallid white, evoking the turmoil of Commodus's era and the artist's own internal landscape.

This exclusive poster from Cy Twombly Store captures the essence of the series, offering you a museum-quality reproduction that honors the original's intensity and complexity.
