Created in 1963, this series of nine paintings was inspired by the Roman Emperor Commodus, notorious for his erratic and violent reign. Part IX, in particular, explodes with swirling loops of crimson and white, evoking the chaos and bloodshed of Commodus's rule. Twombly's unique technique combining gestural abstraction with scribbled text and classical allusions reaches a fever pitch here, capturing the psychological intensity of a tyrant's downfall. This poster reproduces that visceral energy, allowing you to experience the raw power of Twombly's vision in your own space.

Our master's edition archival paper ensures that every nuance of Twombly's brushwork is preserved with museum-quality fidelity.
