Created in 1963, this work is part of a nine-panel series that meditates on the Roman Emperor Commodus, notorious for his cruelty and megalomania. Twombly's signature gestural style characterized by scrawled lines, smudged colors, and visceral energy transforms the canvas into a psychological landscape. The fourth panel, with its swirling loops of white and crimson, evokes both the opulence and the violence of Commodus's reign, capturing the artist's fascination with the intersection of history and myth.

As a pioneer of American abstraction, Twombly merged calligraphic marks with painterly abstraction, often drawing from classical literature and history. This series, in particular, reflects his deep engagement with antiquity, translating historical narratives into raw, emotive compositions. The Nine Discourses on Commodus is considered a pivotal work in Twombly's oeuvre, bridging his early graffiti-like style with the more monumental works of his later career.

Our reproduction of Nine Discourses on Commodus, Part IV is a museum-quality print on our Master's Edition archival paper.
