Nicola's Irises Framed Poster by Cy Twombly
Cy Twombly’s Nicola's Irises is a lyrical meditation on nature, memory, and the passage of time. Created in the later years of his career, this work exemplifies Twombly’s signature blend of gestural abstraction and classical allusion. The iris, a recurring motif in his oeuvre, symbolizes both the fleeting beauty of flowers and the mythological messenger of the gods. In this piece, Twombly’s loose, calligraphic strokes and vibrant hues of purple, green, and red evoke a garden in bloom, while his characteristic scribbles and scrawls invite the viewer into a private, poetic world. As a central figure in postwar American art, Twombly redefined abstraction by infusing it with personal narrative and historical resonance.
