Created in 1962, this seminal work belongs to Twombly’s renowned series of paintings inspired by the assassination of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March (March 15, 44 BC). The canvas is a feverish amalgamation of scribbled lines, smeared pigments, and cryptic words, evoking the chaos and betrayal of that fateful day. Twombly, an American artist who spent much of his life in Italy, was deeply influenced by classical antiquity, and this piece exemplifies his unique ability to fuse ancient history with the raw energy of Abstract Expressionism.

Twombly’s technique was as unconventional as his subject matter. He often worked rapidly, with a gestural abandon that bordered on the primal. In Ides of March, the viewer encounters a surface that seems to pulsate with nervous energy scrawled notations, erasures, and splatters of paint that suggest both the bloodshed of the Roman Senate and the fragmented nature of historical memory. As an artist, Twombly challenged the boundaries of painting, incorporating language, graffiti-like marks, and a muted palette of whites, grays, and reds to create a work that is at once elegant and unsettling.

Our museum-quality canvas print captures every nuance of the original, from the subtle impasto of the brushwork to the delicate interplay of light and shadow.
