Created in 1981–1984, this series is inspired by the tragic Greek myth of Hero and Leander, where Leander swims the Hellespont each night to meet his lover Hero, guided by a torch she lights. In Part I, Twombly's gestural brushwork and evocative use of color capture the tumultuous sea and the lovers' yearning, setting the stage for the narrative's progression across the four parts.

Twombly, a central figure in post-war American art, was known for blending drawing, painting, and writing. His work often references classical literature and mythology, and this series exemplifies his unique ability to translate epic tales into abstract, emotional landscapes. The painting's layered scumbles, drips, and scratches create a sense of movement and raw emotion, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the story's passion and tragedy.

Museum-Quality Reproduction

Our fine art print of Hero and Leandro: A Painting in Four Parts (Part I) is meticulously crafted to capture the depth and texture of Twombly's original canvas.
