Shades of Achilles, Patroclus, and Hector Canvas | Cy Twombly Canvas | Cy Twombly Store

Cy Twombly's Fifty Days at Iliam: Shades of Achilles, Patroclus, and Hector

Cy Twombly's monumental Fifty Days at Iliam cycle (1978) is a landmark of postwar American art, synthesizing classical literature, abstract expressionism, and the artist's signature gestural language. This specific canvas, Shades of Achilles, Patroclus, and Hector, captures the tragic heroism of Homer's Iliad through Twombly's unique blend of scribbled notations, visceral color, and evocative forms. As a leading curator of museum-quality reproductions, Cy Twombly Store is proud to offer this fine art print on premium canvas, meticulously crafted to honor Twombly's original masterpiece.

Art Historical Context and Technique

Created during a period of intense engagement with classical antiquity, Twombly's Fifty Days at Iliam series distills the epic's final weeks into a visual poem of frenetic energy and elegiac beauty. In Shades of Achilles, Patroclus, and Hector, the artist employs his trademark technique: a foundation of scumbled white paint layered with oil crayon, graphite, and oil paint, resulting in a surface that feels both ancient and immediate. The work references the Greek warriors' shades spirits of the dead evoking themes of mortality, memory, and myth. Twombly's expertise in merging text and image creates a palpable sense of narrative, inviting viewers to decipher names, fragments of verse, and abstracted forms. This piece is not merely a depiction but an experience, where the canvas texture enhances the immersive quality of the original.

Why This Reproduction Stands Apart

Our canvas print is produced using responsibly sourced FSC-certified wood stretcher bars and a cotton-polyester blend (300-350gsm, 350-400 microns), ensuring durability and a luxurious feel.
