Death of Giuliano De'Medici Poster by Cy Twombly

Cy Twombly's Death of Giuliano De'Medici is a powerful meditation on mortality, history, and the enduring resonance of the Italian Renaissance. Created in 1962, this work is part of Twombly's renowned series inspired by the Pazzi Conspiracy a violent plot that unfolded in Florence in 1478, resulting in the assassination of Giuliano de' Medici inside the Florence Cathedral. Twombly, known for his unique fusion of Abstract Expressionism and classical allusion, transforms this historical event into a visceral, calligraphic explosion of emotion. The artwork features his signature scribbles, scrawls, and smudges, evoking both the chaos of the moment and the raw grief that followed.

As a leading figure in postwar American art, Twombly bridged the gap between the gestural energy of Jackson Pollock and the intellectual rigor of European art history. This poster captures the intensity of his practice, where writing and drawing merge into a singular language. The work is not merely a representation of a historical event; it is an embodiment of the artist's physical and psychological engagement with the past. Twombly's use of graffiti-like marks challenges traditional notions of composition and beauty, inviting viewers to decipher meaning through visceral experience.
